High Altitude Trombone Quartet

The High Altitude Trombone Quartet (HATQ) was formed in 1997.  Originally there was a large trombone ensemble of 'weekend warriors' who met once a month and adopted the name of High Altitude Trombones.  Bill Holst and Rick Starnes were the co-founders of this large ensemble in 1994.  This group has performed at two International Trombone Festivals in Las Vegas (1995) and Boulder (1998).

The quartet was formed so that the members could focus on more advanced repertoire and hopefully give more frequent performances.  After giving their debut recital in August 1997, the members decided to commission composers and arrangers, and record a CD.  Because there is no known recording of trombone quartet with organ and because there is significant repertoire for this combination, the CD's subject matter was born.  Robert Spillman and Tony Klatka were summarily commissioned and the CD was released in October of 1999.  Mr. Spillman's magnum opus, "All-Day Meeting and Dinner on the Ground" served as the title track; important repertoire by Speer, Mozart, Gabrieli, Ives, and Bruckner make appearances.

The original members of the quartet were Joe Martin, Bill Runyan, Bill Holst, and Jeremy Van Hoy.  During the summer of 1999, Jeff Craig auditioned and filled a vacancy in the quartet.
