David Sckolnik Review on KCME

The High Altitude Trombone Quartet, with two members, Bill Holst and Jeremy

Van Hoy taken right from the Colorado Springs Symphony, have packed their

debut compact disc offering with 74 minutes of music which will especially

satisfy those who love the timbre and flexibility of this ancient

instrument.

Supported by the superb playing of Lee Garret, recorded on the fine organ at

the First Christian Church in downtown Colorado Springs, this mostly modal

music has a dark cast to it, potentially wearing for some. But its

interesting program through the early Baroque to Bach, Mozart, Bruckner,

Ives and finally Mancini heightened by fine arrangements from the Quartet

slowly seeps into the soul.

The disc culminates with the world-premiere recording of Robert Spillman’s

All-Day Meeting and Dinner on the Ground, the discs title track and fine

piece of Americana.

The High Altitiude Trombone Quartet will be in concert at the First Lutheran

Church at 1515 North Cascade at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 14th. Their

CD is available at Media Play, Meeker Music, Grainer Music and Toons. This

is David Sckolnik.
